What this tool does
You tick what data your agent needs —keywords, rankings, backlinks, Search Console, performance, visibility in AI search— and only the MCP servers that cover all of it remain. Add the ones you want and copy the config block for your client: Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor or Codex CLI.

How the catalogue was chosen
Every server was checked on the review date against its primary source: the repository, the npm or PyPI package and the vendor’s docs. Every remote server got a real initialize request, because published URLs do not always answer. Nightwatch, for instance, documents /sse and that path returns 404; the one that works is /mcp.
Abandoned servers (no changes in over six months when a live alternative exists) were left out, and so were the ones that could not be configured from verified data. Google has no official Search Console MCP: the existing ones are community-built, and the three still maintained are here.
Local or remote: what changes in the config
- Local (stdio). Your client starts the server as a process with
npx,uvxorpipx. Credentials go inenv, and the block leaves them as<NAME>so you can see what is missing. - Remote with OAuth. It is just a URL. The client opens the login in your browser the first time, and there is no key to store.
- Remote with a token. SerpApi, Keywords Everywhere and Nightwatch only accept
Authorization: Bearer. The block does not write the token into the file: it reads it from an environment variable using each client’s own syntax (${VAR}in Claude Code,${env:VAR}in Cursor,bearer_token_env_varin Codex). That way the.mcp.jsoncan be committed without leaking the key.
Claude Desktop is the odd one out. Its file can only launch processes. OAuth remote servers are added under Settings → Connectors, and the tool lists them separately. Token-based ones go through mcp-remote, which is how those vendors document it. Ahrefs forbids its own bridges in its terms, so it is never generated with mcp-remote.
Combinations that usually make sense
- Spending nothing: a Search Console MCP for your real data, plus seo-geo-mcp or Lighthouse to audit pages. With that, the agent can cross “which queries are losing clicks” with “what is wrong with that URL”.
- Keyword and competitor research: a paid one. DataForSEO is pay as you go and suits light use; Ahrefs, Semrush and SE Ranking make sense if you already pay the subscription.
- AI visibility (GEO): Peec, Otterly and Profound measure whether ChatGPT, Perplexity or AI Overviews cite you. All of them are paid.
Two warnings before you connect
Every server weighs on the agent’s context. Tool definitions load into every conversation: the Serpstat remote exposes 63 at once and Ahrefs more than 100 (its URL takes ?tools=essentials). Connect the ones you will use, not the whole catalogue.
Some of them write. Nightwatch, Peec, Otterly and Profound ship tools that create or delete things in your account, and Suganthan’s Search Console MCP grants write access unless you pin GSC_SCOPES=readonly (the block already pins it). Check what permissions you hand to an agent that works on its own.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best MCP server for SEO?
It depends on what data your agent needs. Keyword volume, backlinks and rankings need a paid one (Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking or DataForSEO, which is pay as you go). For your own site's data, a Search Console MCP is free. To audit pages without an API key, seo-geo-mcp, Lighthouse or Chrome DevTools will do. Tick what you need in the picker and only the servers that cover it remain.
Is there an official Google Search Console MCP?
No. Google publishes official MCP servers for Analytics and Chrome DevTools, but not for Search Console. The ones that exist are community-built; the most used is mcp-gsc, and search-console-mcp adds Bing Webmaster in the same server.
What is the difference between a local and a remote MCP server?
A local (stdio) server is started by your client as a process on your machine, usually with npx or uvx, and credentials go in environment variables. A remote one is a URL at the vendor: nothing to install, and login is usually OAuth in the browser. Some vendors offer both.
Why does Claude Desktop not accept the URL in its config file?
Because claude_desktop_config.json can only launch processes. OAuth remote servers are added from Settings, under Connectors, with their URL. Token-only ones go through mcp-remote, the bridge those vendors document. Ahrefs also forbids its own bridges in its terms, so in Claude Desktop it goes through Connectors.
Where do I put the API key?
For local servers, in the environment variable the generated block names, replacing the text in angle brackets. For token-based remote servers, the config reads the key from an environment variable you export before opening the client, so the key never sits in a file that might end up in a repository.
Is the table up to date?
Every server was checked against its repository, its package and the vendor's docs, and the remote ones were tested with a real request. The review date is shown at the foot of the tool. Prices and plans change often, so confirm them on the vendor's page before paying.
