Frequently asked questions
How exactly are words counted?
The text is split by spaces, line breaks and tabs, and each resulting block is counted. That means "sin embargo" is two words and "veintiuno" is one, the same way Word and Google Docs do it. Hyphens do not split: "teórico-práctico" counts as one. Numbers also count as words. If your word processor gives a slightly different figure it is usually down to how it treats stray symbols and footnotes.
What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?
The first figure counts absolutely everything in the text, including spaces and line breaks; the second only the visible characters. It matters which one you are asked for: social network limits and meta tag limits count WITH spaces, while some writing commissions and academic assignments are measured without them. When somebody asks for "2,000 characters" they almost always mean with spaces.
What is keyword density and what is a good one?
It is the percentage a word represents of the total text. It is used to check that an article really is about the topic it claims to be about. There is no magic number: forcing a specific percentage is a fifteen-year-old practice that works against you today, because the text ends up unnatural. What is useful is the opposite, spotting excess: if one word appears far above the rest, the text probably reads as repetitive. A range between 1 % and 2 % for the main term is what comes out on its own when the text is well written.
How is reading time calculated?
By dividing the word count by an average reading speed. Here 200 words per minute is used, the usual figure for on-screen reading of general Spanish text. It is an estimate, not a measurement: a technical text with code reads considerably slower and a light news piece faster. It is there to set the reader expectation, not to time them.
Is my text sent to any server?
No. The whole count happens in your browser with JavaScript: the text is not uploaded, not stored and not logged. You can paste an unpublished draft, a working document or confidential material without it leaving your machine.
How many characters should a title or meta description have?
Google does not cut by character count but by pixel width, so any figure is an approximation. As a practical reference, around 60 characters for the title and between 150 and 160 for the meta description avoid truncation in most cases. Bear in mind that capitals and wide letters take more room than narrow ones, so a 60-character title in capitals can indeed be cut. This site meta tag generator shows the real preview of the result.
